Oxford University has a Google Search Appliance box constantly indexing as many Oxford web sites as it can lay its hands on, and currently delivering up results from about 700,000 pages. It is easy to configure it to provide a search facility for a department, college or project, and many webmasters have already done so. This workshop aims to take you beyond the simple search interface, and investigate some of the more esoteric functions, including:

| OUCS is leading the drive to replace the current WebLearn service (based on software called Bodington) with a new system based on the Sakai Collaborative Learning Environment. The new service, due to go into pilot for the 2008/09 academic year, will replicate the functionality of the existing system and will also add lots of new exciting features which will be very useful not only for Teaching and Learning but also for Research and Administration. This workshop will give an overview of the migration project, give some sneak previews of the new service and outline some issues surrounding the movement content into the new service. | |||

Revisiting the three Rs: Ruby, Rails and REST | Barry Cornelius, OUCS | HTML |
| The main aim of this workshop is to demonstrate how easy Rails makes it to build web applications that are supported by a database. The presentation will explain in detail how Rails can be used on Windows/Linux to build a simple web application, and then we will look at some of the issues involved with building more involved web applications. Using digressions on the way, we will also look at some aspects of the Ruby programming language. We will also look at REST, a technology for web services, and see how Rails automatically generates interfaces that are RESTful. Although this talk will cover some of the areas tackled by Christopher Hoskin at the 2007 ITSS Confernece, different material will be used. | |||

| The Oak LDAP
authorization and
directory service will enable service providers within the University
to make real-time authorization decisions, and retrieve information
about Oxford users. This will be especially of interest to units
already using the Webauth or Kerberos single sign-on infrastructure, or
thinking of doing so, but may be
applicable in other situations too. The service will be usable with varying degrees of complexity -- at the simplest level, access controls based on unit affiliation and status can be easily added to an existing Webauth-protected resource through mod_webauthldap configuration; at the most complex, direct access to LDAP in an application may be used to make arbitrarily complex authorization decisions, and retrieve personal data relating to a given user. Future planned work on the service includes student course and year group information, and an ad-hoc user-managed group store. This workshop will given an overview of the data available, the process of registering for access to the LDAP service, and will go through through some sample configurations and APIs in a Linux environment. |

| Podcasting is the method of distributing multimedia files, such as audio files (most commonly, MP3s) or videos, over the internet using the RSS syndication format, for playback on mobile devices such as ipods and personal computers. In this talk the speaker will discuss and demonstrate recent initiatives at Oxford to consolidate and simplify this work at an institutional level, making it much easier for everyone to find a lecture for the early morning bus journey. | |||

| Bradford Networks Campus Manager is the most widely deployed Network Access Control and Identity Management solution within the UK and Ireland Education sector. Khipu have been installing and supporting the solution since July 2005 into a number of Universities, Colleges and Schools Halls of Residence and, or, Campus “Wired” and “Wireless” networks to meet a wide range of requirements including:- Automatic registration of student¹s devices; Authentication of student owned devices; Ensure that these devices are free from vulnerabilities before being granted network access (i.e. Viruses, Spyware, Illegal or prohibitive applications); To track all devices and users on their networks; User, IP and MAC Address, location, state, time on/off etc; To provide a facility to allow non-college owned devices access to key resources or just the WWW, for example; 3rd party contractors, Conference/guest users; Secure and lock down their networks, stopping unauthorised devices being plugged in such as NAT devices, WLAN routers, hubs etc | |||

| The Staff
Gateway project is a
six-month project to improve the information architecture beneath the
staff’ link on the University homepage. The project came about as a
result of the scoping and feasibility study for the University web
review, which found widespread concern that the current website does
not meet the needs of members of staff. The primary objective is to
create a new gateway of links on top of existing web content, which
will start one level below the University's homepage at the 'Staff'
location. This will be a participative session run by members of the project team to gain your input into the project specification as it moves towards the design phase. |
