Jo Ashbourn Jo Ashbourn is the Director of IT for St Cross College and is the Chair of the Colleges' IT Group. She also sits on the ICT Committee as the representative from the Colleges' IT Group. back to programme

Pete Biggs I have been involved with IT in Oxford for the last 20 years and am the IT Manager for the Physical & Theoretical Chemistry Lab. I am chair of the IT Users Group and sit on the ICTC. back to programme
Lou Burnard Lou Burnard joined OUCS in 1974. He set up the Oxford Text Archive and developed numerous database applications in the humanities and social sciences before finding his niche as European editor of the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI); he was also one of the workgroup which defined XML. In 1995 he was appointed manager of the Humanities Computing Unit at OUCS, and is now Assistant Director of OUCS and head of the new Information Support Group, which combines the Help Centre, Registration, Information and Support Services, IT Support Staff Services and the Research Technologies Service back to programme
Barry Cornelius Barry joined OUCS in March 2005, and is working both for OSS Watch and for the Information Services Group. He was previously a support person in the IT Service at the University of Durham. There he looked after Apache httpd, Apache tomcat, MySQL and OpenLDAP servers. Prior to this he spent 18 years lecturing in Computer Science. He has interests in XML, XSL, Java, C# and Web Services, and has produced books on Modula-2 and Java. back to workshop info
Katherine Craddock Katherine has 16 year's experience in direct end-user support, working with countless nationalities in 3 different countries. She interrupted this career focus only temporarily between 1999 and 2002 to work as a Computing Teaching Officer for OUCS. After this she joined forces with Peter Higginbotham to jointly manage the OUCS Help Centre. back to workshop info
John Dickson and Sarah Haworth John Dickson and Sarah Haworth are Personnel Officers in the University's Personnel Services Department. They have worked at Oxford for four years and are currently involved in the development of a new pay and grading structure for the university. Higher Education Role Analysis (HERA) is the job evaluation scheme which has been chosen by the Personnel Committee to underpin this work. John and Sarah are recognised nationally as expert HERA practitioners and regularly provide training to other institutions. back to workshop info
Pete Dunn and Stuart Anderson Pete and Stuart have over 35 years combined technical experience within the IT arena and 20 years within Apple. There are both Senior Systems Engineers specialising in High Performance Computing, Server, Storage, Quicktime streaming and OS X architecture and bring a wealth of education experience to the table. back to programme
Oliver Gorwits Oliver is a member of the OUCS Network Infrastructure Group. He specialises in Linux and Perl programming, and network appliance management. Oliver divides his time between maintenance of the University backbone and OUCS in-house network infrastructures, and assisting with hostmaster and postmaster duties. back to workshop info
Niall Hedderley Niall Hedderley is the Network Manager for the Central Administration, working in the MIS section. As well as providing support for the 700 members of Central Administration staff, MIS are also responsible for the running of centralised administrative systems (Finance, Payroll, Student Records) used both the Administration and the Departments. I've been the Network manager for the last 4 years. back to workshop info
Peter Higginbotham Peter has more than 25 year's experience in supporting computer users, going back to the days when users' problems included punch-tape splicing! For many years he led OUCS's micro computing and PC networking support (starting with Netware 2 and RM ethernet cards) before moving in 2002 to join Katherine Craddock at the helm of the new OUCS Help Centre. In his spare time he has an interest in amateur dramatics which has occasionally been of use in his role at OUCS... back to workshop info
John Ireland John Ireland is the IT Manager at Jesus College, where he has been involved in the development of policies to regulate a wide range of IT facilities. Together these provide a framework for running reliable day-to-day operations, whilst letting users know exactly what to expect from you. back to workshop info
Paul Jeffreys Paul Jeffreys is currently Director of Oxford University's Computer Services and Director of the Oxford e-Science Centre (OeSC). Earlier positions held include being Director of the Central Laboratories Research Council's e-Science Centre, and Head of the Particle Physics Department's Computing and Resource Management Division at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory. Earlier, he was an experimental particle physicist working at the European accelerator centre, CERN, in Switzerland.
Paul has been very active in the e-Science arena in recent years. He prepared cases which won funds from the Government for both the CLRC and the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council e-Science programmes. He was responsible for taking the UK into the EU framework 5 funded DataGrid project. He was also instrumental in creating the OeSC.
Paul holds a BSc in Physics, a PhD in Particle Physics. He is a member of the JISC Committee for Networking, the e-Science core programme Technical Advisory Committee, the e-Science core programme Grid Network Team, two research council e-Science Steering Committees, the Wellcome Bioinformatics Committee, and chairs the CERN FOCUS committee (which oversees IT). He is a professorial fellow at Keble College.

John Jenkins John Jenkins is now in his eighth year at Oxford. In this time he has worked directly or consulted for all but one of the academic divisions. He is currently working on the infrastructure for Business Systems for the University, including networking and security, hardware, database and application software. He is responsible for these aspects of the ISIDORE project. back to workshop info
Jon Lockley Before coming to Oxford, Jon gained a PhD in Astrophysics and joined the Astronomy group at Southampton University. His interest in HPC began when, short of computing power to complete a project, he built a small Linux cluster. After expanding and managing the system for a number of years, he eventually moved into HPC full-time, joining the OSC three years ago. Jon is reponsible for the overall provision of the OSC services including compute performance and user support. His other interests include the promotion of Open Source Software, ethical hacking and he teaches lunchtime introductory Linux classes at OUCS. back to workshop info
Adam Marshall Adam Marshall (The University of Oxford) is the senior developer for Bodington VLE and has both managing and development code for the WS4RL and SPWS JISC projects; he also works on the GuanXi project and is on the Steering group for TransportALL (MLE's for Lifelong Learning). He is an experienced Java programmer, and has a good understanding of Shibboleth, Web Services, and PDP. Adam is an active participant in CETIS LIPSIG. back to workshop info
Stephen Morgan Stephen is the Managing Director of Squiz.net in the UK. With Squiz, he has acquired several years of experience implementing l arge scale content management solutions. Prior to this he launched Canon's Document Management solutions to the Australasian market. He is a passionate about Open Source Software development and has spoken on the topic at several events including the Open Source Symposium and Travel Technology Conference. back to workshop info
James Partridge James moved to the Technical Support Group at OUCS after spending 5 years as IT Manager at St Edmund Hall. At OUCS he works more or less exclusively with MacOS X and Novell Netware, as well as looking after anti-virus support for the University. In his other life he is still trying to finish his DPhil in Czech poetry several years after it should have been submitted. back to workshop info
Dave Price Since joining the Radcliffe Science Library in 1984, I have been closely involved in the development of library IT services. I was systems manager for the libraries' "A Team" which introduced the first OLIS system in 1987-8 and later, as Deputy Keeper of Scientific Books, assisted in the introduction of a range of networked information services, esp. the web, bibliographic databases (OxLIP), electronic journals (TDNet), examination papers (OXAM). More recently, I have taken up the post of Head of the Systems & Electronic Resources Service, a department created as part of the general integration of OU Library Services which merges the old Bodleian Systems Section and Libraries Automation Service, and incorporates the newly established Oxford Digital Library. back to programme
Stephen Quinney Stephen is a Unix Systems Programmer in the OUCS Systems Development Group. He specializes in developing GNU/Linux based software, in particular Perl-based web applications such as the OUCS Webmail system. He is a Debian Developer maintaining a large number of packages including Perl, database and web development libraries. He is also the Debian maintainer for the Request Tracker 3 ticketing software. back to workshop info
Ben Smith Ben Smith is a Senior Security Strategist on the Microsoft Security Strategies Team. He works on developing long-term security strategy at Microsoft and has a particular interest on researching methods to improve security management and measurement techniques. In addition to being a featured speaker at IT industry conferences throughout the world, Ben regularly consults with the National Science Foundation on improving cyber security at community colleges and universities. Ben was the inaugural Chair of CompTIA's vendor-neutral security certification, Security+ and currently is an advisor to United States delegation to the International Standards Organization (ISO), working on information security standards. Ben is a co-author of the Microsoft Windows Security Resource Kit and Assessing Network Security both from Microsoft Press. Ben's regular column on IT strategy, "Business End" debuted in the September 2004 issue of Windows IT Pro magazine. He is certified as an MCSE, CISSP, and CCNA. back to programme
Tim Shaw Tim Shaw has worked for IMSU for 12 years and is responsible for the provision and delivery of data networking and services to the clinical departments of the Division of Medicine based mainly at the hospital sites in Headington. Before that he worked in digital cartography for three years after taking a degree in Geology and Cartography at Oxford Brookes University. Current interests include the use of open-source solutions for network monitoring and management and data storage management. back to workshop info
Margaret Taylor I am MIS Director at Oxford and have a substantial past history in HE MIS. Prior to that I had a varied career in IT ranging from technical programming through consultancy and sales. The main thrust for the MIS directorate is to introduce strategic packaged solutions for the main information systems (Finance, Student Information, HR/Pay-roll and Estates) and to open up the information in them to everyone with a legitimate interest. We also serve administration as local IT support and in that area we are working on defining services and using technology to improve efficiency. back to programme
Jeremy Worth Jeremy Worth has been the Chairman of the IT Support Staff Group since October 2004, having been on the committee since 2001 and he sits on ICTC. Jeremy has been the IT Officer at the Institute of Archaeology and Research Lab for Archaeology since 2000 and started working for Archaeology after completing a Masters in Computation at Keble College. Jeremy runs a large mixed Windows, Unix and Mac environment, with all networked services for the departments provided by a number of Apple XServes running Mac OS X Server. Jeremy has worked within computing for nearly 15 years and specialises in integrating heterogeneous computer systems. back to programme
