Workshop Details

1

Continuous Professional Development

This workshop will interest anyone who feels undervalued, who is interested in professional development and career progression or who's skills and experience lie outside or are too diverse to be readily assessed through established methods.

I will be talking about the Skills Framework for the Information Age. This is a free CPD framework used by Norwich Union, Royal Mail, Microsoft and the University of Reading, among others. It is very similar to the BCS scheme, but a lot cheaper. It is similar to any Oxford based scheme which might be invented, but more widely recognised. I will be discussing how this could be run in Oxford, its benefits, requirements and costs.

I hope this will be an interactive session and encourage you to bring your views, experiences, preferences and dislikes.

Jane Littlehales, OUCS

2

Security

Novice/intermediate. Discussion of general security principles and good practice with some detailed discussion but not to a massively deep level.

Tony Brett, Corpus Christi College

3

The Resource Discovery Network: Finding Stuff by the Subject-Load

This workshop is aimed at IT support officers and others who would like answers to questions like, "Where can I find web pages for the study of My Subject?" or "What's the DNER?", or "What's the difference between a gateway, a hub and a portal?" or "How can I do my bit for the RDN?". The workshop will include a presentation and online demonstrations of selected Hubs, including Humbul, Oxford's own bit of the Resource Discovery Network.

The Resource Discovery Network is funded by JISC to develop a series of subject-based hubs for finding online resources suitable for HE teaching and research. Currently there are hubs for Health and Life Sciences (Biome); Engineering, Mathematics and Computing (EMC); Humanities (Humbul); Physical Sciences (PSIgate); and Social Sciences, Business and Law (SOSIG). Each of the Hubs will be developing a range of other services for their subject communities. Further information from http://www.rdn.ac.uk/

Michael Fraser, HCU

4

Web Sites and Change Management Systems

This workshop will look at the use of change management systems for managing web sites and other documentation. We will look at the problems of controlling a large multi-author web site, and see which of them can be solved with change management. OUCS has started to use a commercial system, Perforce, to manage its documentation, and we will look at how this works in practice.

Sebastian Rahtz, OUCS

5

Implementing Novell GroupWise

Our implementation of Novell GroupWise will be examined from an intermediate technical viewpoint. A basic understanding of networked systems is assumed. We'll look at the group working problems we needed to solve, our choice of GroupWare product, project planning, our experiences good and bad with GroupWise and future developments.

Tim Shaw, Sylvain Phaneuf, IMSU

6

Monitoring your Network, a College Approach

I will describe the tools I now use within College, including WS Ping Pack Pro, Command View Firewall for NT (formally Elron NT Firewall) and eTrust Intrusion Detection (formerly SessionWall-3), giving brief demonstrations of their implementation and use within College.

This is not meant to be a discussion on the pros and cons of network monitoring, I'm sure we have talked that to death, this is just a way of implementing it.

Christopher Bamber, Somerville College

7

Web Caching at Oxford

This will be an intermediate-level workshop, hopefully not too technical. I will cover what caching is about, why we are doing it at Oxford, and how the caching service is set up. It will essentially be a repeat of the lunchtime seminar to be given in late May/early June.

David Hastings, OUCS

8

The Herald Service

This will give a general overview of the Herald system, which will include some technical detail. I will then move on to discuss planned upgrades and ideas for enhancements to Herald: mail filtering; web filestore exports; shared diary & calendaring; distributed printing; web page change notification.

There will be time for discussion at the end: what improvements would you like to see? which features are most important to you? etc.

Ray Miller, OUCS

9

Database Publishing on the Web with Access and Filemaker Pro: A Comparison

The workshop will consider the methods of making two different database formats available for live querying over the web using their own scripting languages. For Access (Active Server Pages) and for FileMaker Pro (Claris Database Mark-up Language) we will describe:

  • What you can do with each system;
  • How you set them up;
  • Comparison of specific features in each system;
  • Conclusions and recommendations.

It is aimed at Access and or Filemaker users who are considering how to make databases available on the web.

Sophie Clarke, Paul Groves, Sarah Porter, HCDT

10

Nifty Tools for Web Masters and Users

The (current!) plan is to look at some nifty tools in the area of link checking (and general site checking), making use of the University-wide search engine for local site purposes and some non-mainstream web browser software - Opera, Amaya and HP's (now defunct) WebPrintSmart. This presentation will look at windows client-side tools, not on server side tools.

Malcolm Austen, OUCS

11

The Future for Administrative Information in Oxford????

I would like this to be a highly participative workshop, I propose to begin by talking about Administrative systems in HE as a whole and the direction other Universities are taking. I would like to develop this, with the help of the audience, into discussions on how Oxford might excel in this area as it does academically!

Margaret Taylor, AISU

12

Registration Services

A rough guide to OUCS Registration Services - the past, present and future.

Sue Brooks, OUCS

13

Thin-client systems using Microsoft Terminal Server and Citrix Metaframe

Session will probably cover basic operation of MS Terminal Server, role of Citrix Metaframe, and application installation in a terminal server environment. Really aimed at those considering or planning to use this technology.

Peter Higginbotham, OUCS

14

Supporting Macintosh Computers

Karl Harrison, Chemistry
