I joined OUCS in 1998 as Assistant Director with specific responsibilities for Distributed Computing. I had a similar role for the University of Cambridge Computing Service, concentrating there on liaison with Humanities departments and with the Colleges. After studying Maths and Computer Science at the University of York, I did post-doc. research at Leeds University, a fixed-term contract back in the York Computing Service, and then came south to work as a Research Adviser in the Academic Computing Service of the Open University. I then left HE for a spell in a small software company in Bradford but returned to academia in 1993 to work at the 'other place'.

Craig Tranfield

Computer Operations Manager, Computing Laboratory - Around 1990 my role at a major consulting engineers in Reading developed into being the Operations manager. We developed our own help desk integrating it with both a s/w and h/w inventory, and had a front desk operator. In the mid 1990s I had a spell as a consultant which included interpreting customer requirements for a s/w house. Since coming to OUCL at the end of 1995 we have set up and run a help desk very much different from the previous one, and with a different set of strengths and weaknesses.

Stewart Tolhurst

I have worked for the Faculty of Music since November 1996, it being my first job since graduating from the University of Surrey with a 2.1 in Music and Sound Recording (Tonmeister). Initially the position was seen as a technician but it has grown into an IT Officer post since then. My main responsibility is for the upkeep of both the Faculty's computing facilities and the Electronic Music Studio. I am currently completing a part time MSc in Computer Science at Oxford Brookes University and beginning my dissertation on techniques for masking packet loss in streaming audio. I have a keen interest in the Internet and maintain the Faculty web server and studio web site.
