I have recently joined OUCS as Assistant Director with specific responsibilities for Distributed Computing. I come from performing a similar role for the University of Cambridge Computing Service, concentrating there on liaison with Humanities departments and the Colleges.
After studying Maths and Computer Science at the University of York, I did post-doc. research at Leeds University, a fixed-term contract back in the York Computing Service, and then came south to work as a Research Adviser in the Academic Computing Service of the Open University. I then left HE for a spell in a small software company in Bradford but returned to academia in 1993 to work at the 'other place'.

I am currently client-server specialist with the Libraries Automation Service, although I also act as an external consultant to Corpus Christi College and a number of commercial firms. Currently I am working on a number of JISC related projects to make integrated bibliographic catalogues available over the Internet both for Oxford University and the Royal Schools of Music.
Having studied Mathematics and Philosophy, and Computation, I started at the Libraries Automation Service as a Microcomputer Programmer. During this time I developed strong contacts with the UK Microsoft Educational Division and the European Microsoft Windows Academic Centre (EMWAC) based at Edinburgh, and even was granted an interview with the Redmond based Project Manager for NT in Education. I have worked with the early versions of Microsoft Exchange server, and am recognised by the Microsoft Exchange development team as one of the experts in migrating SMTP based mail to Exchange.
On the rare occasions when I am not attached to a computer, I enjoy classical music (and am the archivist of the International Rachmaninoff Society) and spending far too much money buying books of all shapes and flavours.

I retired as User Services Manager on June 30th 1997 after working for OUCS for 32 years. Since retiring I have been so busy playing tennis, playing bridge, walking, learning about wild flowers, etc that I wondered how I ever had time to work.
I have been commissioned by Alex Reid, Director of OUCS, to produced a History of the Computing Services. In between my other activities I have been researching the early years of computing in Oxford.

I am currently the Helpdesk System Co-Ordinator at Oxford University Computing Services, responsible for day to day work on the project to acquire and implement an automated helpdesk system. With a degree in Physics with Solid State Electronics from Exeter University, and after a PGCE and a short course in software engineering, I started work as a digital electronics technician in the school of engineering at Coventry University, and subsequently moved onto computer support and giving training courses in DOS and Windows. This led to a post at Oxford where I joined the training section training section of the Computing Services, teaching a range of computing courses (in particular programming), and helping to develop a course bookings system. I still teach some programming as well as software engineering and internet courses at the Department of Continuing Education.

When I am not involved with IT, I spend much of my time cycling, Morris dancing, and on trains to and from Cornwall, where my family are living at the moment.
